Medical Procedures for Mole Surgery

Mole surgery can be done to get rid of moles that are disturbing. But in addition to purely aesthetic or aesthetic reasons, this procedure is also sometimes performed for medical reasons. Especially if a mole is suspected as skin cancer. Moles are small spots measuring no more than 5 millimeters, brown or blackish in color, and are round or oval in shape that can appear on any part of the skin. Moles are formed from color-producing cells or skin pigments called melanocytes. The appearance of a mole is actually not a serious condition, because a normal mole is not cancerous.

These are abnormal moles

The following are some signs of abnormal moles that need to be aware of and must be removed by mole surgery, namely:
  • Measuring more than 6 millimeters.
  • Irregular shape.
  • Moles become hard, itchy, or bleed.
  • Moles change shape or color.
  • The skin around the mole becomes dry or scaly.
Generally, doctors will recommend mole surgery if it detects the characteristics of a mole that is suspected as skin cancer. After the abnormal tissue is removed, the doctor may conduct a biopsy to determine whether the mole is cancerous or not.

Mole Operating Procedures that Appropriate Medical Rules

A number of ways can be done to remove moles, but this depends on the shape, size and location of the moles on the body. Before surgery, the doctor will first see the condition of the patient's moles and skin. If you do not experience changes in shape, color, and size, and are not suspected of being skin cancer, generally the mole does not need surgery because it is considered harmless. However, if a mole is suspected as cancer and has been confirmed through a biopsy, the doctor will recommend mole surgery. There are several mole surgery procedures that are generally performed, namely:
  • Shave removal

  • This method can be used to remove small, slightly protruding moles. Initially, the doctor will anesthetize the area to be removed by injecting local anesthesia. Then, a scalpel is used to remove the entire mole. This surgery does not require stitches at the surgical site because the skin usually heals quickly within a few weeks. However, the results of this mole operation may cause scars.
  • Surgical excision

  • Mole surgery with excision surgery is performed to remove a larger sized mole. Like a surgical shaving procedure, the doctor will use a scalpel to lift the mole to its roots. After the surgery, the skin area covered with moles will be sewn.
  • Laser surgery

  • Surgery using this laser is one way to get rid of moles that are often done. Use of the laser is done by firing a special laser beam into the part of the body covered with moles to remove pigment in the skin in that part.
In addition to the several ways above, mole surgery can also be done with frozen surgical techniques and electrosurgery or cautery. The operation of the mole above has several risks and complications, such as leaving a scar on the skin, pain, and infection. However, smaller mole operations can usually heal quickly and leave only a few scars.

Tips to Prevent the appearance of Moles

The existence of moles is generally based on genetic or hereditary factors. If a mole arises because of these factors, then there is no way that can be done to prevent it. But for newly appointed moles, there are a few tips you can take to prevent them from reappearing, namely:
  • Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 when you want to move in the hot sun.
  • Wear clothes that protect from the sun, such as hats, long sleeves, jackets with headgear, and trousers.
  • Protect yourself in the shade and avoid exposure to direct sunlight under the hot weather, which is at around 10:00 to 16:00.
Mole surgery can be done as long as you have a suspected mole that is dangerous or has the potential to become cancerous. If you feel that your moles are abnormal, immediately consult a dermatologist for further examination and treatment.
